 Shining Tree Temple takes its name from Noya Rao, the legendary Tree of Light revered within Shipibo traditions of the Peruvian Amazon. She is regarded not simply as a plant, but as an illuminated spirit teacher whose wisdom guides people toward clarity, compassion, truth, and deeper connection with the living world. Within Shipibo cosmology, plants are understood to possess consciousness, intelligence, and spirit, and through the sacred practice of dieta, practitioners enter into relationship with these plant teachers to learn directly from their wisdom. 

Noya Rao is considered one of the most sacred and mysterious Master Plants within Amazonian shamanic traditions. Often referred to as the Tree of Light or Flying Medicine, Shipibo lore speaks of her luminous presence, with stories describing leaves that glow in the darkness and visions of radiant beings appearing to those who work deeply with her spirit. She is associated with truth, heightened awareness, inner vision, and the remembrance of our connection to creation itself. 

Traditionally, the relationship with Noya Rao is cultivated through long term plant dieta, an ancient practice involving solitude, simplicity, prayer, and deep listening within the natural world. Through this process, the practitioner gradually learns to quiet external distractions and open to the subtle intelligence and teachings of the plant. In the Shipibo tradition, these relationships are approached with humility, discipline, and reverence, often over many years of dedicated practice. 

For us, Noya Rao represents remembrance. A remembrance that the Earth is alive, intelligent, and sacred. A remembrance that healing is not separate from reconnection to ourselves, to one another, and to the natural world.
